RECONSTRUCTION
Breast Reconstruction surgery restores the natural appearance of one or both breasts following breast cancer surgery such as a Mastectomy and for congenital breast deformities. The single or double Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction surgery (or Lumpectomy) can be conducted during a patient’s initial cancer operation or delayed until after recovery and follow up treatment.
Breast Reconstruction surgery uses several techniques:
Breast implant reconstruction uses breast expanders that are then substituted for silicone implants:
After a Mastectomy, empty implants known as breast expanders, are inserted into the breast area and filled with saline over 6 to 8 weeks. This tissue expansion creates a cavity for permanent breast implants to be inserted. During this time, breasts are monitored to determine when the skin has expanded sufficiently to replace the expanders with implants, which is typically after 2-3 months.
Fat Grafting Breast Reconstruction:
This procedure uses tissue from another part of the body (such as the stomach, thigh or back) to create the breasts. This technique is usually combined with breast implant reconstruction to achieve most optimal results.
Â
The recovery time from breast reconstruction surgery will depend on the type of procedure and the health of the patient. Generally, patients who have breast reconstruction surgery will be able to return home on the same day and can expect a full recovery in about 4 to 6 weeks.
